NSW’s current public pages publish revised subclass 190 occupation and residence guidance. This guide uses that live information. It does not promise a date for the next invitation round or claim that invitations have already been issued under a new program year.
Always compare the latest NSW announcement with the page for your exact subclass. An updated occupation list establishes which skills are listed; it does not tell an individual when they will be selected. Keep the program-year label attached to any historical invitation figures you consult.
Check the visa and the state requirements
Subclass 190 is a permanent skilled visa. Federal requirements include a suitable occupation and assessment, competent English, the points test and being under 45 when invited to apply. Nomination contributes five points where the requirements for those points are met.
NSW then applies its own occupation and residence criteria. Prepare two checklists: one for the visa, one for NSW nomination. For example, a skills assessment may be valid for a federal pathway while the assessed occupation falls outside the NSW list. Neither list replaces the other.
Match the occupation, not just the job title
The NSW Skills List is expressed at the four-digit ANZSCO unit-group level. Your specific assessed occupation must fit a listed group and also be eligible for subclass 190. Check the occupation code on your assessment rather than assuming your employer’s job title establishes the match.
The official list notice says the recent update is for subclass 190 only; the regional subclass 491 list will have a separate update. Do not apply one subclass’s list to the other. Save the page and date used for your assessment, then recheck it before responding to an invitation.
Which residence basis applies?
For onshore consideration, the current 190 page requires either paid NSW work in the nominated occupation for at least 20 hours weekly, or at least six continuous months residing in NSW. Offshore candidates need at least six continuous months residing offshore.
Prepare an accurate address and travel timeline. Distinguish a short holiday from a change in where you normally live, and get advice where the facts are unclear. NSW uses the usual-residence information in the EOI, so a relocation should prompt a review of the relevant claim and supporting records.
Keep the EOI ready for an invitation
NSW’s published EOI instructions require an EOI targeting NSW and a single subclass. They allow multiple separate EOIs. Check the document-validity and skilled-employment rules before lodging, particularly the assessment’s deemed-skilled date.
NSW ranks eligible EOIs using several factors, rather than offering a guaranteed public cut-off. If selected, the state nomination invitation is valid for 14 days. Prepare the documents in advance. A successful nomination is followed by the separate Home Affairs visa application stage; check the federal invitation and its deadline carefully.
Prepare for the decision you actually face
If you are deciding whether to move, change employment or wait for NSW selection, record the practical consequences as well as the nomination criteria. A plan that depends on an invitation arriving before a lease, job or visa ends needs an alternative.
- Create a claim-to-evidence checklist covering qualifications, assessment, English, employment and residence.
- List expiry dates and any discrepancy between your EOI, current circumstances and previous applications.
- Keep evidence of actual duties and hours; a role title alone may not resolve an employment claim.
- Review lawful-status options before your current visa expires. An EOI does not itself provide a bridging visa.
