Subclass 407: Training Visa

Subclass 407 Training visa is a temporary visa which allows sponsored individual to participate in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve skills related to occupation, area of tertiary study, field of expertise, or to participate in a professional development training program in Australia.

Stay Period

Up to 2 years from the first entry date if the applicant is outside Australia at the time of visa grant.

Up to 2 years from the visa grant date if the applicant is in Australia at the time of visa grant.

All applicants may be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply and to be granted this visa.
Before applying for Subclass 407 visa, the applicant must first have a sponsor who either has applied to be or has been approved as a Temporary Activities sponsor.

In addition, the sponsor must either have submitted an occupational training program nomination or have the nomination approved before Subclass 407 visa application can be made. If the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, nomination is not required but the nominee will need to be invited by the Australian Commonwealth Government agency.

Nomination requirements for Subclass 407 visa are different depending on the purpose or type of training. There are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:

Occupational training required for registration

This applies to:
  • occupational training that is necessary for the nominee to obtain registration, membership or licensing either in Australia, or in nominee's home country; and
  • the registration, membership or licensing is required for the nominee to be employed in the nominee's occupation either in Australia, or in nominee's home country; and
  • the duration of the occupational training is appropriate and reasonable, taking into account of the nominee's prior occupational experience; and
  • the occupational training is workplace based; and
  • the nominee has appropriate qualifications and experience to undertake the relevant occupational training.

Occupational training to enhance skills in an eligible occupation

This applies to occupational training that:
  • is a structured workplace training program; and
  • is specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee; and
  • is of a duration that meets the specific training needs of the nominee; and
  • is in relation to an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations; and
  • involves nominee who has recent pror experience related to occupation in the list of eligible skilled occupations that:
    • is equivalent to at least 12 months full-time experience in the eligible occupation; and
    • has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged.

Occupational training for capacity building overseas

3 categories available:
  1. Overseas qualification
  2. This applies to:
    • nominee that is currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution and the nominee is required to complete a period of no more than 6 months of practical experience, research or observation to get the qualification; and
    • the occupational training is a structured workplace-based training program specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee for up to 6 months.
  3. Government support
  4. This applies to:
    • occupational training that is supported by a government agency in Australia, or by the government of a foreign country that is the home country of the nominee; and
    • the occupational training is a structured workplace-based training program specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee; and
    • of a duration that meets the specific training needs of the nominee.
  5. Professional development
  6. This applies to:
    • nominee that is in a managerial or professional position of an overseas employer; and
    • the occupational training is relevant to, and consistent with, the development of the managerial or professional skills of the nominee; and
    • the occupational training will provide skills and expertise relevant to, and consistent with, the business of the overseas employer of the nominee; and
    • the primary form of the occupational training is the provision of face-to-face teaching in a classroom or similar environment.
To make a valid application for Subclass 407 visa and/or be granted this visa, the following sets of criteria must be met:
Be at least 18 years old at the time of visa decision
The primary visa applicant must has turned 18 years old at the time of this visa being granted, unless exceptional circumstances exist for the grant of this visa to primary applicant below 18.
Have functional English
The primary visa applicant must has at least functional English.
Have adequate arrangements for health insurance
Before this visa can be granted, all applicants must have adequate arrangements for health insurance that meet the requirements for visa purposes throughout the period of intended stay in Australia.

Applicant from countries that have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia might not need to purchase insurance cover in order to meet the adequate arrangements for health insurance requirement. For detailed information, kindly visit Services Australia website.
Genuine Temporary Entrant
All applicants must demonstrate genuine intends to stay in Australia temporarily and this will be assessed based on:
  • the applicants’ situation in home country;
  • the applicants’ financial situation;
  • the applicants’ immigration history;
  • the applicants’ previous compliance with visa conditions;
  • whether the applicants intend to comply with the conditions to which the Subclass 407 visa would be subject;
  • any other relevant matter.
Have adequate financial support
All applicants must have adequate financial capacity to support himself/herself or have adequate access to financial support throughout the applicants’ intended stay in Australia.
Be sponsored
Applicants need to be sponsored by eligible organisation or person in Australia. The sponsor will need to first become or apply to become a Temporary Activities sponsor before visa application can be lodged.

Temporary Activities sponsorship application and nomination must first be approved before this visa can be granted.
Be nominated
Sponsor must have submitted a nomination in relation to a specific type of occupational training program. The nomination must have been approved for visa application to be approved.

If the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, nomination is not required but the nominee will need to be invited by the Australian Commonwealth Government agency.
Not have this visa
If applying in Australia, the substantive visa or the last substantive visa held by the applicant must not be a:
  • permanent visa; or
  • Subclass 403 Temporary Work (International Relations) visa in the Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream; or
  • Subclass 771 Transit visa; or
  • Special Purpose visa.
