People who are not New Zealand citizens and are considering a visa based on their family relationship with a qualifying New Zealand citizen.
Key considerations
- The New Zealand family member’s Australian status is important. Distinguish a Special Category visa holder from an eligible New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or Australian citizen.
- This is a temporary family-relationship visa. It can permit living, working and studying in Australia; it does not itself grant permanent residence.
- Prepare evidence of the family relationship, identity and the New Zealand citizen’s status, together with the other required application documents.
- A further 461 requires a new eligibility assessment. Relationship changes or the New Zealand family member becoming Australian can affect the appropriate next step.

Is the 461 the same as a Partner visa?

Do my family member’s citizenship options automatically give me citizenship?
No. Each person’s eligibility must be assessed. The direct citizenship pathway available to qualifying New Zealand SCV holders does not automatically extend to their non-New Zealand family members.
