Subclass 485: Temporary Graduate Visa

Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa is a temporary visa which allows student visa holder who has recently graduated with eligible Australian qualification to live, work and/or study in Australia temporarily.

  • Graduate Work Stream
  • Post-Study Work Stream

Stay Period

  • For Graduate Work stream, up to 18 months. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years;
  • For Post-Study Work stream:
    • bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
    • masters by coursework: 2 years
    • masters by research: 3 years
    • doctoral degree: 4 years
    • Hong Kong passport holders who successfully complete a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree: 5 years

Primary applicant must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply for this visa and to be granted this visa.

Secondary applicant who will be making a combined application with the primary applicant may be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply for this visa. However, the secondary applicant must be in Australia to be granted this visa.

Secondary applicant who will be making subsequent entrant application may be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply and to be granted this visa.
To make a valid application for Subclass 485 visa and/or be granted this visa, the following sets of general criteria must be met:
Under 50 years old on the day of application lodgement
The primary applicant must be under 50 years old on the day of submitting Subclass 485 visa application.

If the primary applicant turned 50 years old while waiting for the visa application to be assessed, the visa can still be granted to the primary applicant as long as the primary applicant hasn’t turn 50 years old on the day of visa application lodgement.
Not have this visa
The primary applicant will not be eligible for a new Subclass 485 visa if the primary applicant has previously held a Subclass 476 Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa or a Subclass 485 visa as a primary visa holder.
Meet English language requirement or have eligible passport
Unless exemption applies, the primary applicant must satisfy the English language requirement for Subclass 485 visa. Evidence of meeting the English language requirement is mandatory at the time of visa application.

English language requirement considered met if the primary applicant holds a current and valid passport from any of the following countries:
  • the United Kingdom;
  • the United States of America;
  • Canada;
  • New Zealand;
  • the Republic of Ireland;
Have applied for Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Checks
The primary applicant and any secondary applicant aged 16 and above who have been to Australia must have applied for Australian Federal Police (AFP) National Police Check Certificate(s) before the day the visa application will be lodged.
Have adequate arrangements for health insurance
At the time of visa application lodgement, all applicants must have adequate arrangements for health insurance that meet the requirements for this visa purposes throughout the period of intended stay in Australia. The health insurance cover must commence before a visa can be granted.

Applicant from countries that have a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia might not need to purchase health insurance cover in order to meet the adequate arrangements for health insurance requirement. For detailed information, kindly visit Services Australia website.
Met the Australian Study Requirement within the past 6 months
The primary applicant must have met the Australian Study Requirement in the 6 months before applying for a Subclass 485 visa.

Australian Study Requirement is considered met if the primary applicant has completed 1 or more degree(s), diploma(s) or trade qualification(s) for course(s):
  • that are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS); and
  • that were completed in a total of at least 16 calendar months; and
  • that were completed as a result of a total of at least 2 academic years study; and
  • for which all instruction was conducted in English; and
  • that were undertook while the primary applicant held an Australian visa with permission to strudy.
