AUSDIRECT MIGRATION

How to migrate to Australia as an electrical engineer

Electrical engineers can work across power generation, networks, equipment and building systems. To plan Australian migration, identify the engineering scope of your role, check the assessment pathway and review the visa requirements alongside any authority needed to practise.

Who this may suit

Electrical Engineer professionals and graduates planning Australian skilled or employer-sponsored migration.

Key considerations

  • Electrical Engineer is ANZSCO 233311, with Engineers Australia as the assessing authority.
  • Electrical Engineer, Electronics Engineer and Electrician are different occupations.
  • Migration assessment, visa work rights and occupational licensing are separate checks.

Identify the electrical engineering scope

Electrical engineers design and develop systems and equipment for generating, distributing, using and controlling electric power. Work can include selecting circuits or protection equipment, designing power infrastructure, interpreting technical specifications and overseeing installation, operation or maintenance from an engineering perspective.

Compare the actual role with the proposed occupation. Electronics design, telecommunications, electrical drafting and licensed electrical trade work may fall under different classifications. A job title containing “electrical” is not enough. Describe the level of engineering analysis and decision-making, as well as the equipment or system involved.

Make the technical contribution clear

Prepare a project record that connects your design or operational responsibility with the decisions you made. Examples to organise might include a power-system study, an equipment specification, protection coordination, an installation design review or a commissioning issue. The point is to explain your own contribution, not to demonstrate familiarity with a list of software packages.

If you worked on a multidisciplinary project, separate your work from the responsibilities of other engineers, contractors and electricians. Keep employment dates, duties and hours consistent across the CV and references. Follow the official evidence checklist and obtain permission before disclosing client drawings, network information or other restricted records.

Check qualifications and the assessment pathway

Confirm the specific engineering program, accreditation and applicable years with Engineers Australia. An accredited qualification may support an appropriate recognition pathway. A CDR may be relevant where the qualification is not accredited or the nominated occupation differs from its title.

An electrical or electronics degree should not be treated as interchangeable without reviewing the underlying study and competencies. Check the intended assessment outcome before preparing the application. English evidence for Engineers Australia and Home Affairs must be checked independently, including current accepted-test and exemption rules.

Review the visa route and the proposed employer role

Electrical Engineer appears in the current MLTSSL and the lists used for 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry. For points-tested migration, consider invited permanent subclass 189, permanent subclass 190 with state nomination and provisional regional subclass 491, subject to the relevant criteria and selection process.

With an employer, compare temporary Skills in Demand subclass 482, permanent subclass 186 and provisional regional subclass 494. The stream determines the assessment requirements and any exemptions. The engineering duties, employer nomination, location and applicant eligibility all need to fit; an occupation code alone cannot establish that.

Keep registration, work rights and timing separate

An Engineers Australia migration outcome is not an electrician’s licence. Before accepting a position, clarify whether it involves professional engineering services, electrical trade work, or both, and check the relevant regulator’s requirements. Professional engineer registration also depends on the jurisdiction and services involved.

For state or regional pathways, check the location and current nomination requirements rather than relying on a historic occupation table. Keep evidence ready for the claims in your EOI. Meeting the minimum 65-point threshold does not guarantee an invitation, and submitting an EOI does not extend your current visa.

How we can help

Ausdirect can help compare the occupation, assessment and visa requirements, identify evidence gaps and plan the next application step around your circumstances.

Questions to consider

Does an Electrical Engineer assessment let me work as an electrician?

It does not itself grant an electrical trade licence. Check the licensing requirements for the work and jurisdiction with the relevant regulator.

Can an electronics qualification support Electrical Engineer?

It requires review of the qualification, competencies and appropriate assessment route. Electrical Engineer and Electronics Engineer are separate nominated occupations.
