Overview of Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

Subclass 143 Contributory Parent visa is a permanent visa which allows adult child who is at least 18 years old and is either a settled Australian citizen, settled Australian permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen, to sponsor their parent(s) to live permanently in Australia.

The main advantage of the Subclass 143 Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa is shorter processing time (approx. 3 to 4 years) than Subclass 103 Parent (Permanent) visa (approx. 30 years) but cost more.

Who can be a Sponsor?

  • An adult child of the applicant or the adult child’s cohabiting spouse or de facto partner, who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, the child’s cohabiting spouse who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If both the applicant’s child and the cohabiting spouse of the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, a relative or guardian of the child or of the child’s spouse/de facto partner, who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, a community organisation lawfully established in Australia where there is a relationship between the organisation and the applicant’s child.

If a sponsor is a person, the sponsor must be either a settled Australian citizen, settled Australian permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen.

Subclass 405 Investor Retirement or Subclass 410 Retirement visa holder on 8 May 2018 need not have a sponsor.

Subclass 173 Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa holder might not need to have a sponsor to apply for this Subclass 143 visa if the sponsor for Subclass 173 visa dies before Subclass 173 visa expires and there’s no other person that can meet sponsorship’s eligibility for this Subclass 143 visa.

How long can I stay after receiving the 143 Visa?

Indefinitely with 5-year travel facility after which you may need to apply for Subclass 155 or 157 Resident Return visa to extend your travel facility.

Where can I apply for the 143 visa?

  • If on 8 May 2018, the visa or last substantive visa held by an applicant was a Subclass 405 Investor Retirement visa or Subclass 410 Retirement visa, and the applicant has not held any other substantive visa between 8 May 2018 and the date of applying for Subclass 143 Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa:
  • The applicant must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply for this visa. However, the applicant can be in or outside Australia to be granted this visa.
  • If the applicant holds a Subclass 173 Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa at the time of, or has held a Subclass 173 visa in the 28 days before lodging this Subclass 143 visa application:
  • The applicant may be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply and to be granted this visa.
  • In most other cases:
  • The applicant may be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply for this visa. However, the applicant must be outside Australia to be granted this visa.

What if I am also holding Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa?

At the time of application, the applicant must not be holding a Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa that is still in effect.

If the applicant held such a Subclass 870 visa, must have left Australia since that visa ceased to be in effect.

What happens to my other previously applied Partner Visa?

If application for another parent visa is still pending, the applicant can only apply for this Subclass 143 Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa once a decision on the pending application has been made or the pending application has been withdrawn.

What is Family Balance Test Requirement?

To be eligible for this visa, the applicant must meet the balance of family test. In general, the applicant meets the balance of family test if there are more children living in Australia than in any other single country.

Subclass 405 Investor Retirement or Subclass 410 Retirement visa holder on 8 May 2018 & Subclass 173 Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa holder at the time of application need not meet the balance of family test.

Assurance of Support

To be granted this visa, the applicant must have an assurer for an Assurance of Support. Assurance of Support assures the government that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa.
