Choose the right AASW assessment
AASW provides different pathways for internationally qualified social workers and international graduates of AASW-accredited Australian courses. Start with where and what you studied, rather than using a generic allied-health assessment checklist.
For overseas qualifications, AASW examines whether the course is a professional social work qualification in its country of training and whether its learning outcomes are comparable with accredited Australian programs. Relevant employment alone does not turn another discipline into a qualifying social work degree.
Australian study also requires the appropriate migration assessment when the visa pathway calls for it. Completion of an accredited course does not itself provide a migration skills-assessment outcome or remove the English assessment requirement.
Field education and qualification evidence
The current overseas assessment benchmark is at least 1,000 hours of field education across two placements with contrasting practice focuses, including one in direct practice. The guide also addresses how placements fit within the professional course.
Some applicants with more than 500 but fewer than 1,000 hours across at least two placements may provide specified alternative evidence to address a shortfall. This requires an individual review under the current guide; it is not a general waiver. The guide treats fewer than 500 hours or only one placement differently and directs applicants toward further placement study.
Ask your education provider for the transcript, course information and placement records early. Verify the dates, supervised hours, practice settings and learning outcomes. If an institution has changed names or closed, identify the records-holder before submitting an incomplete application.
AASW English requirements checked in October 2026
The 20 May 2026 policy accepts IELTS Academic and a qualifying IELTS Academic One Skill Retake. It does not treat a different test accepted for a visa as interchangeable. The options include:
- One sitting: overall 7.0 and at least 7.0 in every component.
- Two sittings within six months: at least 7.0 in each component across the tests, with no component below 6.5.
- One Skill Retake: three original components at least 7.0 and the remaining component at least 6.5; the retake must reach 7.0 within 60 days. The original full test must be computer-based at an eligible centre.
- Ordinary test results must be within three years of application. The One Skill Retake result must be within twelve months.
- An education-based exemption requires the specified secondary schooling and at least three years of bachelor-level or higher tertiary study, taught and assessed in English in eligible countries. Check the full policy and evidence rules.

Check visa English separately
University admission, the AASW assessment and a Home Affairs visa application are different decisions. A university’s English acceptance does not establish that you meet AASW’s policy. Likewise, an AASW exemption should not be assumed to establish a particular visa English level or points claim.
Plan the sequence before booking a test. Record the intended assessment and visa, the relevant test type, the dates and any exemption evidence. If one result will be used for several purposes, confirm each authority’s acceptance rules rather than relying on the most generous one.
Post-qualification work and points
AASW offers an optional skilled-employment assessment after a successful migration skills assessment. Its published framework covers at least one year of Australian or three years of overseas post-qualifying social work employment within the previous ten years.
The work must meet the relevant social-work criteria. Do not automatically count support-worker, counselling or general welfare roles as Social Worker employment. Prepare position descriptions, dates, hours, payment evidence and proof that the role required qualified social-work practice. Assessment of your qualification and assessment of employment are separate matters.
Visa pathways for the occupation
Social Worker 272511 is on the MLTSSL under LIN 19/051, with AASW as assessor. This allows occupation-level consideration of points-tested 189, 190 and the relevant 491 pathways, subject to all remaining requirements. State nomination and family sponsorship have different conditions.
The occupation also appears in the current 482 Core Skills, 186 Direct Entry and 494 instruments. Employer-sponsored eligibility still depends on the employer, position, stream and applicant. A listed occupation or positive assessment does not guarantee an invitation, sponsorship or permanent residence.
Assessment, membership and registration are different
AASW qualification recognition and membership eligibility should not be described as Ahpra registration. Social work is a self-regulated profession rather than an Ahpra-registered profession. Employers may still specify professional eligibility, credentials, screening and role-specific requirements.
For South Australia, the government’s current announcement says it will not proceed with commencement of the mandatory social-worker registration scheme. Older pages describing intended registration dates should not be used as evidence that the scheme is operating. Check current requirements again before starting work, particularly where a role or service has additional obligations.
