LOOK BEYOND THE DAILY RATE
Start with a transparent Toronto–Victoria reference example. Adjust daily pay and the amount of work you expect, then compare both sides in Australian dollars.
PUBLISHED REFERENCE CASE · TORONTO & VICTORIA
Toronto’s daily supply rate after over 100 accumulated TDSB elementary teaching days and Victoria’s government-school full-day CRT rate: a ready-to-use reference case, not a like-for-like career-stage comparison, national average or current job offer. Change any figure to compare your own situation.
Using the reference inputs below, before tax and costs.
Same booking assumptions for both countries. Actual bookings are not guaranteed.
The default annual illustration uses 3 booked days × 38 working weeks = 114 days. This booking assumption is separate from Toronto’s accumulated-service threshold; the calculator applies your selected rate throughout the illustration.
Daily difference compares Australian gross pay with Canadian gross pay converted to AUD. Percentage difference is relative to the converted Canadian rate. Annual gross = daily rate × booked days × working weeks. The rates come from different published schedules and are not like-for-like take-home pay. Benefits, pension or superannuation, holiday pay, loadings and other conditions can differ. Tax, health cover, exchange fees, housing, transport, relocation and other costs are excluded. A higher gross figure does not establish higher disposable income. This is a planning illustration, not financial advice.
Where the starting figures come from. This is a dated regional reference case, not a median, a national midrange or a guaranteed current rate.
TDSB occasional-teacher pay: effective 1 September 2025 Victoria CRT published schedule: effective 1 July 2025 Victoria CRT handbook: full-day and hourly payment basis Toronto elementary occasional teachers: accumulated-service bands, pages 2–3 Bank of Canada: FX reference, 14 October 2026Reviewed 15 October 2026. A later operative Victorian pay schedule was not verified for this example. The Victorian figure is the full-day CRT payment cap, not a seniority-based maximum or school staffing reimbursement. TDSB and Victorian employment conditions differ. Check the relevant agreement, employer offer and dated currency rate before making decisions.
UNDERSTAND THE MOVING PARTS
A teaching qualification, a job offer and a visa answer different questions. Plan them together without assuming one approval guarantees another.
PATHWAY 1
Eligible Canadian passport holders aged 18–35 may consider subclass 417 for an initial Australian stay. Check work conditions and teacher registration before accepting teaching work.

Plan around a school role or an eligible training arrangement. These options use different sponsorship, nomination and visa requirements; choose the framework that fits the position and your circumstances.
For an eligible teaching role with an approved sponsoring employer. The position, salary, experience and registration requirements need to align.

A stay of up to two years may be available, subject to the training category, supervision, registration, approved Temporary Activities Sponsorship and nomination where required.

For teachers exploring independent, state-nominated or regional pathways, including 189, 190 and 491. Check occupation, skills assessment, points and invitation requirements; meeting minimum points does not guarantee an invitation.
Explore this visa pathway →PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
Teacher registration is handled by the relevant state or territory authority. Your Canadian credentials need to be considered against its requirements, including qualifications, English proficiency and suitability checks.
SKILLS ASSESSMENT
AITSL assesses school-teacher qualifications and English proficiency for migration purposes. Check whether your intended visa requires it. An AITSL assessment and teacher registration are separate processes.
EMPLOYMENT
Schools and education systems set recruitment requirements. Compare teaching areas, year levels, contract terms and support. For example, Queensland’s international recruitment process has additional experience and assessment requirements.
VISA & LONGER-TERM PLANS
Explore suitable work rights separately from employment. Visa options and any longer-term pathway depend on your individual circumstances and current rules. A job offer does not itself grant a visa or permanent residence.
We’ll review your qualifications, experience and plans, explain your visa options, and help you understand the registration and skills assessment steps relevant to you.

METROPOLITAN & SUBURBAN
Look at school fit, rental availability, commuting time and your support network. Compare the cost of living with the salary and contract actually offered.

Experience different schools and cover teacher absences. Flexibility comes with variable bookings and income.
Teach with a school for a defined period. Review the duties, term, remuneration and conditions in the actual offer.
Explore continuity and a school community. Employment availability and visa requirements still need separate consideration.
A fixed-term or ongoing school-employed role may support sponsorship where the position, employer, proposed employment period and candidate meet the relevant visa and nomination requirements. Sponsorship is not limited to ongoing employment, and a fixed-term contract does not qualify automatically. Ask the school about sponsorship separately from the contract type.
A PLAN THAT FITS YOUR LIFE
Check which employers recruit less-experienced teachers. Ask about induction, mentoring and registration support; some international recruitment programs require prior experience.
Document your subjects, responsibilities and service. Ask how previous experience is assessed for salary and which opportunities fit your background.
Build a shared budget and timeline. Research partner work options, schooling, childcare, healthcare access and the support network you would need.
Start with your current visa conditions, work rights and registration status. Get advice before changing employment or relying on a future visa pathway.

GOOD QUESTIONS. CLEARER ANSWERS.
A starting point for your research.
Your own circumstances need an individual review.
It may meet the relevant requirements, but recognition is not automatic. Canadian citizenship alone does not confirm qualification recognition, an English-language exemption or visa eligibility. The authority will consider your specific qualification and supporting evidence. Check the registration authority for your chosen state and any separate AITSL assessment criteria.
No. AITSL’s migration skills assessment and state or territory teacher registration serve different purposes. Check both processes for your situation; one does not automatically replace the other. Read AITSL’s application guidance.
You may be able to apply for recognition of prior teaching service. The outcome depends on the state or employer and the evidence supplied. Queensland, for example, asks for detailed prior-service information. Confirm your assessed salary before accepting an offer.
Do not assume an exemption based on citizenship. The relevant authority’s criteria, your qualifications and the language of study matter. AITSL has study-based and test-based options; check which evidence applies to you.
No. Employment and visa decisions are separate. Any temporary or permanent migration option has its own requirements and approval process. Plan for your intended length of stay without assuming a later visa outcome.
Use the contact page to explain your teaching background, preferred locations and intended timeframe. Ask what an individual migration review would involve and confirm any applicable service scope and fees before engaging.
