Explain why a residual occupation fits
VETASSESS identifies examples including Knowledge Manager, Museum Registrar, Procurement Specialist and Information Management Co-ordinator. It asks applicants to explain why another specific occupation does not better describe their qualifications and work.
For preparation, write down the purpose of your role, the information or organisational problem you address and the professional judgement you apply. Then compare the closest named occupations. A broad job title such as “Business Specialist” does not resolve the comparison.
Choose the occupation on the work, not because a preferred alternative is unavailable for a visa. A residual category is not a route around another occupation’s assessment criteria.
Take particular care with procurement and compliance
A Procurement Specialist is different from a senior Procurement Manager or a clerical purchasing role. Explain the level of analysis and advice you provide, along with the decisions you own and the work performed by other teams.
VETASSESS says some professional compliance, internal-control and risk-management work may be considered. Internal auditing and other specifically classified functions still need separate comparison.
A useful consultation note can set out one problem you assessed, the options considered and the advice or organisational improvement you delivered. Do not submit confidential investigation findings or employee information in a general enquiry.

Identify the correct assessing authority
For the ANZSCO 2013 occupation in LIN 19/051, the instrument expressly assigns a data scientist within 224999 to ACS and other information and organisation professionals nec to VETASSESS. The six-digit code alone is therefore not enough to choose an assessment provider.
For employer-sponsored programs using ANZSCO 2022, the CSOL separately lists Data Scientist 224115 with ACS, while 224999 remains listed with VETASSESS for 186 Direct Entry. Do not automatically convert an existing assessment or use the VETASSESS checklist for an ACS data-science application.

Check the VETASSESS qualification and work pathway
For the non-data-scientist roles it assesses, VETASSESS treats 224999 as Group B, requiring a bachelor-equivalent qualification or higher. Its pathways vary with qualification relevance and employment history.
The highly relevant qualification route includes a year of suitable post-qualification employment in the last five years, at 20 hours or more per week. Other pathways require longer experience. The subject matter should be reviewed against the particular professional role rather than the broad category alone.
Prepare transcripts, a career chronology and the required employer evidence. VETASSESS asks for a cover letter explaining the residual-category choice; make the explanation specific and consistent with those records.
Assess the visa route after the specialisation
224999 is on the STSOL under LIN 19/051. It can support state-nominated 190 or 491, subject to selection and other criteria, but not the occupation requirement for a new 189 Points-tested or family-sponsored 491 application.
224999 also appears on the CSOL for 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry. That is not a guarantee of sponsorship: assess the proposed job, correct specialisation and other requirements. Data scientists must consider the separate 2022 code in those programs.

No. LIN 19/051 assigns the data-scientist specialisation to ACS. Other specialisations under that instrument use VETASSESS. Check the visa framework and exact work.
Is “nec” suitable when no familiar job title matches?
A title mismatch is only a reason to investigate. You must still establish professional work within the category and explain why a more specific occupation is not the better fit.
Can a general administrator choose this code?
Not merely because the role involves information. The assessment concerns professional-level functions and their qualification and employment requirements, not every administrative task.
