Who this may suit
Maintenance schedulers, shutdown planners and plant-maintenance planning professionals.
Key considerations
- The current VETASSESS classification is Group C, requiring a comparable AQF Diploma or higher.
- The occupation is on the state-nominated 491 Regional Occupation List, not the 189 or 190 points-tested lists.
- Hands-on repair work alone is not the same occupation as maintenance planning.
What makes a role Maintenance Planner?
This occupation develops and coordinates plans for keeping plant equipment operational. Titles can include Maintenance Scheduler, Shutdown Coordinator and Shutdown Planner. The focus is planning maintenance activity, resources and timing rather than primarily diagnosing and repairing faults.
For your evidence, explain the assets you support, the planning cycle and your responsibility for coordinating maintenance. A useful example follows a shutdown from identifying required work through scheduling, resource planning and completion review. Show how your decisions affect equipment availability, rather than relying on a list of software names.
Current assessment: VETASSESS Group C
VETASSESS currently places Maintenance Planner in Group C. All four pathways require an AQF-comparable diploma or higher. Work must be highly relevant, at the required skill level and at least twenty hours a week. The post-qualification pathways use employment within the last five years.
- Relevant diploma or higher: one year of post-qualification work.
- Unrelated diploma or higher plus a relevant Certificate IV or higher: one year of post-qualification work.
- Unrelated diploma or higher without that additional relevant qualification: two years of post-qualification work.
- The alternative pathway requires four years of relevant employment, including at least one year within the last five years.
Qualification content matters
Maintenance Management is identified as a relevant field. Related engineering, technology or plant-operation studies may be considered according to the work context. The assessor examines both the qualification level and its relevance.
Prepare your transcript and explain the subjects that relate to the planning work you actually perform. If your training is a trade certificate rather than a diploma-level qualification, investigate the assessment requirement before assuming work experience will replace it. ANZSCO’s indicative occupational skill description is not an automatic waiver of VETASSESS’s published criteria.
Where you completed an additional qualification later in your career, keep a clear chronology. Ask which pathway and qualifying period apply to that combination rather than simply treating every year after your first course as eligible experience.
Build evidence around your planning responsibility
The core employment record should confirm your exact dates, weekly hours, salary, duties and reporting contact. Support it with the required payment evidence and qualification documents. Separate promotions or changes from hands-on maintenance into a planning role.
For preparation, identify examples such as maintenance schedules, work plans, resource estimates, backlog analysis or shutdown reviews that help explain your role. Use only material you are authorised to share and remove unnecessary client, site-security or commercial details. These examples provide context; they do not replace the assessor’s formal evidence requirements.
If your job combines repairing and planning, explain the balance honestly. Clarify who approves the plan and what you personally develop or coordinate. A role title copied from an organisational chart will not resolve a mismatch between your claimed occupation and everyday work.
Visa routes: the ROL distinction is essential
Maintenance Planner 312911 is in the Regional Occupation List in LIN 19/051, with VETASSESS as assessor. This supports consideration of state-nominated subclass 491. It is not listed for points-tested 189, subclass 190 or family-sponsored 491 under that instrument.
A state still needs to be open to the relevant applicant category and occupation. Its work, residence or selection rules may be more restrictive than the federal list. A successful assessment or sufficient federal points does not guarantee state nomination.
The occupation also appears in the current 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry lists, and the separate 494 occupation list. These employer-sponsored routes require an eligible position and the remaining nomination and visa requirements. Check the proposed employer, location and stream before relying on an offer.

Review the assessment outcome before claiming points
VETASSESS’s outcome identifies the qualifying period and Date Deemed Skilled. Employment used to satisfy the qualifying period is not included in its points advice. Review the assessed periods before preparing an EOI, especially if your early work was in a different occupation.
Keep the assessment, state nomination or employer sponsorship, and visa application on separate timelines. Record expiry dates and missing evidence early. None of these preliminary steps should be treated as a guarantee of a visa or future permanent residence.
How we can help
Ausdirect can review the boundary between planning and hands-on maintenance, check qualification and employment evidence, and compare the available 491 and employer-sponsored routes.
Questions to consider
Can I use this occupation for subclass 190?
The current LIN 19/051 entry is on the ROL, which supports state-nominated 491 rather than 190. Do not select a different occupation unless your qualifications and duties genuinely support it.
Your next step
Prepare your transcript, role history and examples of planning responsibility for an occupation-focused consultation.
