Is it mandatory to purchase health cover for my Australia Visitor Visa?

The short answer to the above question is “It Depends”. Generally speaking, it’s not mandatory for most Australian visitor visa holders to purchase private health insurance during their visit and stay in Australia. However, for certain types of visitor visas, you may need to have private health insurance throughout the entire period of your physical presence in Australia.

If you are required to have a valid health cover, “Condition 8501” will be printed on your visa grant notice. “Condition 8501” means that you must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while you are in Australia. If you don’t, your visa might be cancelled and/or your future Australia visa application may be refused.r

What type of Health Insurance should I purchase for my Visitor Visa?

There are various types of private health insurance policies in the market. You should purchase a health insurance policy that complies with Condition 8501.
