South Australia has announced a targeted opening for Registrations of Interest (ROIs) under its 2026–27 General Skilled Migration program. The opening applies to people living and working in South Australia whose current visas expire on or before 31 January 2027, subject to the relevant stream requirements.

For applicants overseas, the route remains different: submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect, without a South Australian ROI.

The 22 October program announcement makes this an important time to review eligibility, supporting evidence and visa timing. It should not be read as an unrestricted opening for every onshore applicant.

Who can submit an onshore ROI now?

The announced opening covers applicants who are both living and working in South Australia and whose current visas are due to expire by 31 January 2027. Applicants must also meet the requirements of the relevant 2026–27 nomination stream and have a current SkillSelect EOI.

The expiry date needs careful reading. 31 January 2027 is the current-visa-expiry cutoff in the announcement, not an announced ROI lodgement deadline.

For example, a person living and working in South Australia with a current visa expiring on 20 January 2027 falls within that date criterion, but still needs to satisfy the other requirements. Someone whose current visa expires in February 2027 should not assume this opening includes them.

What should offshore applicants do?

Offshore candidates can continue lodging EOIs through SkillSelect. South Australia will consider suitable candidates directly from those EOIs; an ROI is not required.

Start by checking that your occupation is available to offshore applicants on the South Australian Skilled Occupation List, then review the applicable offshore requirements. Having an EOI in the system alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee an invitation.

Which sectors are being prioritised?

The announcement identifies six priority sectors for invitations across the onshore and offshore groups:

  • Building and construction
  • Defence
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Health
  • Manufacturing

High-ranking candidates working outside these sectors may also be considered. A priority-sector job is therefore relevant to selection, but it does not replace occupation, stream or visa requirements. Equally, applicants outside those sectors should assess their circumstances rather than assume they are automatically excluded.

Understand the stages before you apply

An EOI records your interest through the Australian Government's SkillSelect system. An onshore ROI is a separate expression of interest to South Australia. Neither step is an approval of state nomination.

Under the state's application process, candidates must receive an invitation before applying for nomination. If invited, follow the instructions and due date in that invitation. The nomination assessment and the federal visa process remain separate stages, each with its own requirements.

A practical preparation checklist

  1. Confirm your current visa details. Check the expiry date against your records and review your lawful-stay options separately from your nomination plans. Do not assume an expected invitation will arrive before your visa expires.
  2. Match your circumstances to a stream. Review the current skilled migrant pathways, including the requirements connected to your location, occupation, employment and any South Australian study.
  3. Review your EOI carefully. Home Affairs advises applicants to keep their EOI up to date when circumstances change. Check work experience, qualifications, English results, skills assessment and family circumstances before relying on the recorded points.
  4. Prepare consistent evidence. Use the state's document checklist and reconcile your employment and residence dates across the documents you intend to provide. A clear timeline helps identify gaps before submission.
  5. Check the current instructions before lodging. This announcement confirms the targeted opening, but it does not replace the detailed occupation and stream criteria. Check the applicable official pages rather than carrying forward assumptions from an earlier program year.
