Define the structural engineering responsibilities
Structural Engineer involves analysing how structures and their materials behave, developing structural designs and overseeing relevant construction work. Responsibilities can include evaluating static and dynamic loads, selecting structural systems and addressing strength, stability and serviceability.
A broad civil background may support structural work, but describe the specialisation accurately. Separate responsibility for structural analysis and design decisions from producing drawings, coordinating documents or monitoring construction progress. Being part of a building project does not make every role a Structural Engineer position.
Prepare examples of your own design judgement
Organise genuine project examples around a problem, the constraints, your analysis and the resulting decision. For preparation, consider work involving a load path, a material or system choice, an existing-structure assessment, or a construction change that required structural review. Explain what you did and what another engineer checked or approved.
A list of modelling packages or a set of drawings does not explain the underlying judgement. Keep the project account consistent with your employment references and qualifications. Follow the assessment checklist and confidentiality obligations; do not submit client calculations or drawings merely because they would make the application look more detailed.
Choose the assessment route for the intended occupation
Check the exact degree and accreditation period before choosing an Engineers Australia pathway. An appropriate accredited-qualification route may be available. A CDR may be relevant when your nominated occupation differs from the qualification title or the qualification does not satisfy the accredited route.
If your award is in civil engineering but your career is structural, review that combination before applying. Make sure the documents explain the specialist knowledge and work, without claiming that a title change alone establishes competence. Check any separate employment assessment needed for the visa claims you intend to make.
Compare the visa options without assuming selection
Structural Engineer is included in the current MLTSSL and the instruments for 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry. Skilled options can include permanent subclass 189, permanent state-nominated subclass 190 and provisional regional subclass 491. Each requires the applicable assessment, invitation or nomination and other eligibility criteria.
An employer offer may instead support a temporary 482, permanent 186 or provisional regional 494 plan. Review the precise stream, duties and location, including the relevant assessment requirement or exemption. A consultancy’s workload or a construction project’s scale does not establish that a nomination or visa will be approved.
Check registration before committing to a role
Professional registration and building-industry requirements can affect the work you may undertake in a particular jurisdiction. Confirm these with the relevant regulator before accepting responsibility for design, certification or other regulated services. Engineers Australia migration assessment and professional registration are separate processes.
Plan English evidence, points and timing alongside the employment discussion. Assessment English and visa English have different rules. For points-tested applications, 65 points is the minimum threshold, not a promised invitation score. Maintain an accurate EOI and check your current visa expiry independently; the EOI does not provide a bridging visa.
