How to migrate to Australia as a special needs teacher

Special needs teaching requires careful attention to specialist study as well as initial teacher education. Start by establishing what your qualifications prepare you to teach, then assess registration, employment and visa options separately.

Who this may suit

Qualified specialist teachers supporting school students with learning difficulties who are considering Australian teaching work or migration.

Key considerations

  • Special Needs Teacher, ANZSCO 241511, requires relevant specialist qualifications; a support-role title or experience alone is insufficient.
  • AITSL distinguishes this occupation from teachers of students with hearing or sight impairments and Special Education Teachers (nec).
  • Occupation-list eligibility does not guarantee nomination, sponsorship, an invitation or a visa.

Choose the specialist occupation carefully

AITSL describes Special Needs Teacher as a specialist-qualified teacher working with pupils with particular learning difficulties in primary, middle or secondary schools. Examine the focus of your formal training and the responsibilities of your proposed position.

Teacher of the Hearing Impaired and Teacher of the Sight Impaired have their own checklists. Special Education Teachers (not elsewhere classified) covers distinct special-education fields outside those categories and Special Needs Teacher. It is not a general fallback for missing qualifications. Classroom support, disability-support and teacher-assistant roles should not be presented as qualified teaching merely because they involve similar students.

Map both teacher education and specialist study

The July 2026 checklist requires at least four years of completed full-time-equivalent university study, including initial teacher education comparable to an Australian bachelor degree or higher. The teacher-education component must comprise at least one full-time-equivalent year and at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school.

In addition, your study must contain one full-time-equivalent year of special needs study leading to a qualification comparable to an Australian bachelor degree or higher. This can be integrated into initial teacher education. Where it is integrated, the supervised practice must be in a special needs setting.

Map which award provides teacher education and which provides the specialism. Inclusion workshops or a partly completed postgraduate course do not establish the specialist requirement.

Explain the practicum setting with university evidence

Obtain the awarding university’s signed and dated placement statement, confirming duration, students’ ages and setting. For an integrated special-needs teacher-education qualification, make the specialist setting explicit. A general letter saying only “school placement completed” may leave an important requirement unresolved.

Assessed university practice and later employment are different evidence. A school reference or supervising teacher’s report does not replace the official university statement. If specialist study followed an earlier teaching qualification, present the two awards clearly and provide additional practicum evidence where applicable; do not assume every pathway requires a second 45-day placement.

Check English before arranging assessments

AITSL’s study route requires four full years of qualifying degree-level university study in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, including recognised initial teacher education. All teacher-education components, including placements, must be completed in the listed countries. English-medium study elsewhere is not enough for this option.

Alternatively, Academic IELTS must show reading and writing of at least 7 and speaking and listening of at least 8 on one Test Report Form. The test must be within three years before application. One Skill Retake is accepted; PTE is not. Visa and registration authorities have separate English rules.

Compare points-tested migration routes

Special Needs Teacher is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. Subject to all other requirements, consider the permanent subclass 189 Skilled Independent and subclass 190 Skilled Nominated, or provisional subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional.

The 189 does not require a school sponsor or state nomination. The 190 requires state or territory nomination. The 491 requires state or territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship and carries regional conditions. State criteria, invitation selection and available places remain separate from occupation-list eligibility.

Check age and assessment validity before relying on a points calculation. For the 189 points-tested stream, you must be under 45 when invited. A minimum of 65 points does not guarantee an invitation. Record how every claim will be evidenced, particularly where your employment spans mainstream teaching and specialist work.

Assess an employer offer on its actual duties

Special Needs Teacher is on the Core Skills Occupation List. For a Skills in Demand subclass 482 application, the employer, nominated role, experience, pay and applicant requirements all need checking. Assessment requirements depend on the visa and stream; registration remains a separate issue.

Compare permanent subclass 186 and regional subclass 494 where appropriate. Direct Entry 186 generally requires three years of relevant experience and a positive skills assessment, with age and English rules and limited exemptions. The 494 is provisional, requires qualifying regional employment and has its own experience and assessment criteria. An employer’s staffing need does not establish your eligibility or promise permanent residence.

Keep professional registration separate

Obtain the registration or accreditation required by the relevant state or territory before starting teaching work. Ask the prospective school about its specialist appointment requirements and any checks that must be completed before the start date.

You do not need Australian registration merely to lodge an AITSL application. Existing provisional or full registration may be considered in assessment, but you still need supporting evidence. Neither a migration assessment nor a visa replaces professional registration.

Prepare a specialist evidence file

Gather final awards, transcripts and placement statements for teacher education and specialist study. Record study duration, credit transfers, awarding institutions and name changes. Add an employment history describing actual teaching duties.

If claiming skilled employment points, examine the periods and occupation relationship carefully. AITSL offers an optional Skilled Employment Statement after a positive assessment; Home Affairs determines visa points. Before accepting a role, align registration timing, visa conditions and the employer’s expectations, and allow for assessment or nomination delays.

How we can help

Ausdirect can review how your initial teaching qualification, specialist study and employment fit together, identify the appropriate occupation questions and compare visa routes against your circumstances.

Questions to consider

Is experience in a special school sufficient?

Experience alone does not replace the published specialist study requirement. The qualifications, their level and content, and the relevant placement evidence must be considered together.

Can a primary-trained teacher apply?

Potentially, where the initial teacher education, specialist qualification and supervised-practice requirements are met. Being primary-trained neither automatically qualifies nor excludes you.

Does the same assessment cover every special-education occupation?

No. AITSL uses separate occupation criteria. Select the occupation supported by your qualifications rather than assuming the categories are interchangeable. Explore the teacher migration guides
