Identify the mechanical engineering work in your role
Mechanical Engineer covers engineering responsibility for mechanical equipment, systems and plant, including design, installation, operation and maintenance. Your work may involve selecting materials, specifying components, assessing performance or setting technical inspection and maintenance standards.
A maintenance or project-engineer title needs context. Explain the engineering analysis and decisions you perform, alongside any routine maintenance, supervision or scheduling. A role focused primarily on production processes or industrial efficiency may require comparison with another occupation. Choose the code that the evidence supports, rather than the code you think will be easiest.
Organise a useful technical employment record
Build a project timeline that connects your employers, dates, position changes and technical responsibilities. Useful preparation examples include a design calculation you completed, a specification you developed, a commissioning problem you resolved or a reliability improvement you justified. Explain your own contribution and the engineering basis for the decision.
The assessor’s checklist controls what must be submitted. Do not upload confidential drawings or client information without permission. Where records are restricted, ask about acceptable evidence rather than inventing details. Keep employment references consistent with your CV and the periods you may later claim for visa points.
Check the qualification assessment route
For an Engineers Australia assessment, confirm the exact qualification, accreditation period and engineering category. An appropriate accredited-qualification route may be available; a Competency Demonstration Report may be needed where the qualification or nominated occupation does not fit that route.
A mechanical engineering degree and a later specialised job should be considered together. Do not assume a course title settles the migration outcome. Prepare the required English evidence separately from the English evidence needed for your visa.
Compare the current visa pathways
Mechanical Engineer appears in the current MLTSSL and in the occupation instruments for 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry. These lists are not interchangeable. Points-tested options include permanent subclass 189, permanent state-nominated subclass 190 and provisional regional subclass 491, subject to assessment, invitation and the remaining criteria.
An employer may instead support a temporary 482, permanent 186 or provisional regional 494 pathway. Review the relevant stream, actual position and any skills-assessment exemption. A planned later permanent application remains a separate process; an employer’s intention to sponsor is not a guaranteed outcome.
Plan location, points and the employment start date
Compare the actual worksite and duties with the state or regional route you are considering. A manufacturing plant, consulting office and remote maintenance assignment may involve different practical location arrangements. Check current nomination criteria before accepting a role solely for migration reasons.
For points-tested visas, calculate only claims you can substantiate. The minimum 65 points does not guarantee an invitation. Maintain your EOI and current visa independently; an EOI does not provide a bridging visa. Before starting professional work, check the registration requirements for the jurisdiction and services involved.
