Anaesthetic Technician 311211: assessment and visa guide

Anaesthetic technician migration depends on specialised training and relevant technical work supporting anaesthesia. The assessment should describe that work accurately, rather than rely on a hospital title or general healthcare experience.

Who this may suit

Anaesthetic technicians and employers considering an Australian technical role in operating theatres or clinics.

Key considerations

  • VETASSESS assesses Anaesthetic Technician, ANZSCO 311211.
  • Its current occupation-specific requirements include a relevant diploma-level qualification and post-qualification employment.
  • The occupation’s STSOL position differs from MLTSSL access to subclass 189.

Match your work to the technical occupation

The role centres on preparing and maintaining anaesthetic equipment and assisting anaesthetists during procedures. Evidence may address equipment operation, workstation checks, preparation and support for the anaesthetic team. Explain how these responsibilities formed part of your normal paid role.

Distinguish this work from a medical specialist’s practice, registered nursing, general theatre support or sterile-services work. Similar workplace tasks do not make the occupations interchangeable. Where your duties crossed several functions, describe their balance honestly and compare the occupation definitions before choosing a code.

Use the current VETASSESS requirements

VETASSESS currently classifies Anaesthetic Technician in Group E and requires a qualification comparable to an AQF Diploma or higher in a highly relevant field. Listed examples include anaesthetics and paramedicine specialised in anaesthetic science.

Its published pathway also requires at least one year of highly relevant post-qualification employment, at an appropriate skill level, within the last five years and at least 20 hours per week. Both qualification and employment must be suitable. Do not replace the occupation-specific diploma requirement with a generic description of another Group E occupation.

Build an evidence file that can be verified

Gather the qualification award, transcript, CV and the required employment records. Employer statements should clearly identify dates, hours, role and duties, with an authorised contact. Payment records provide a separate form of evidence; a job description alone does not establish that the employment occurred.

If a hospital has renamed a department or your job title changed, explain the timeline and provide appropriate records. Follow VETASSESS’ instructions where ordinary documents are unavailable. A personal declaration by itself is not a replacement for the required official employment and payment evidence.

Compare the occupation’s actual visa options

311211 is on the STSOL, rather than the MLTSSL. Under the current points-tested instrument, state-nominated 190 and state-nominated 491 may be considered, subject to all criteria. The occupation does not currently provide access to 189 points-tested or family-sponsored 491.

It is also included in the current 482 Core Skills, 186 Direct Entry and 494 occupation instruments. An employer-sponsored plan still needs a suitable position, the appropriate assessment or exemption, and the other stream requirements. Federal listing is not a promise that a state will nominate the occupation or that a particular hospital can sponsor you.

Review the outcome and the proposed work arrangements

Check the assessed occupation and employment findings before making points claims. VETASSESS points advice is considered by Home Affairs, which decides the points awarded. Do not count all past healthcare employment as skilled anaesthetic-technician work without checking the outcome and applicable rules.

A migration assessment does not itself authorise work in another regulated profession. Confirm the employer’s role requirements and any registration needed for the actual duties. Plan visa English evidence, current visa conditions and the proposed start date separately. Keep the assessment and nomination documents consistent rather than treating a positive result as a completed migration process.

How we can help

Ausdirect can help connect the occupation, skills-assessment and visa requirements, identify missing evidence and plan an application around your professional pathway.

Questions to consider

Can general nursing experience automatically replace technician training?

No. VETASSESS assesses the relevance and level of both the qualification and employment against this specific occupation.

Does a positive VETASSESS result guarantee sponsorship?

No. The employer, position and visa applicant must also meet the requirements of the proposed stream.
