Who this may suit
Software engineers preparing to assess their migration options.
Key considerations
- Match the occupation to your genuine duties.
- Use the current ACS pathway and evidence requirements.
- Check the specific visa stream and occupation classification.
What ANZSCO 261313 covers
ACS identifies Software Engineer as ANZSCO 261313. This occupation concerns software applications and systems across design, development, testing, implementation and support. The work you actually do matters more than the wording of your job title.
Software Engineer is distinct from Software and Applications Programmers nec, ANZSCO 261399. Similar technology or a shared occupation unit group does not make those occupations interchangeable. Choose the occupation that accurately describes your duties and evidence.

Explain your role through accurate evidence
Prepare a clear account of your responsibilities, technical decisions, development and testing work, implementation and maintenance. Connect your employment records to the role you actually performed.
Do not copy a generic occupation task list into references or alter duties to fit a preferred code. Project examples can help explain your work, but they do not replace the employment evidence required by the assessment authority.
Choose the appropriate ACS assessment pathway
ACS assesses qualifications and professional ICT experience against its current pathway criteria and the nominated occupation. Requirements differ according to the assessment pathway, qualification level, ICT content and relevance of the qualification and employment.
Use the ACS pathway guidance before collecting documents. The occupation classification’s skill-level description is not a guarantee that a particular qualification or number of years of work will meet ACS criteria. Avoid relying on an old universal degree-plus-experience formula.
Prepare qualifications and employment records
Check the current ACS document rules and the requirements for your circumstances. A CV or a job title alone does not substitute for the specified evidence.
- Identity evidence required for your selected assessment pathway
- Qualification certificates and complete academic transcripts
- Employment references that accurately describe dates, hours, responsibilities and the employer
- Independent payment evidence that meets the current ACS requirements
- Required translations and evidence for any special employment arrangement
Check the visa’s occupation list and classification version
Home Affairs currently uses ANZSCO 2022 for subclasses 186 and 482 and ANZSCO 2013 for other skilled subclasses. Check the classification version, current occupation instrument, stream and any caveats for the actual visa you are considering.
An occupation’s presence on a list does not establish your personal visa eligibility or guarantee an invitation, employer nomination or state nomination. State and territory programs have their own requirements. Do not substitute an OSCA occupation code for the migration classification without checking the applicable rules.
A skills assessment is one part of the process
A positive ACS assessment and a visa grant are different decisions. The intended pathway may also involve an expression of interest, an invitation or nomination, and visa requirements such as English, age, health and character.
ACS does not require an English test for its skills assessment. That does not remove the English requirements of a visa or nomination program. Check each decision separately before making employment or relocation commitments.
Build a plan around your circumstances
Start with your genuine duties, qualifications, work history and intended visa route. An organised evidence review can identify which assessment pathway and occupation need further consideration.
Discuss material gaps, unusual employment arrangements and any current visa expiry before lodging. No assessment outcome or invitation should be promised in advance.

Questions to consider
Is Software Engineer the same as Software and Applications Programmers nec?
No. Software Engineer is ANZSCO 261313; Software and Applications Programmers nec is 261399. Assess the actual duties and applicable classification rather than swapping codes.
Does five years of work automatically replace a degree for ACS?
No universal rule should be inferred from the occupation description. ACS applies its current pathway and assessment criteria to the qualifications and experience provided.
Does a positive ACS result guarantee a visa?
No. The assessment is separate from invitation, nomination and the visa decision. Each relevant requirement still needs to be met.
Do I need English evidence?
ACS does not require an English test for skills assessment, but your visa or nomination pathway may require English evidence. Check the separate requirements.
