Registered Nurses nec 254499: assessment and migration

Registered Nurses nec is a specific migration occupation, not permission to select whichever nursing code seems easiest. The useful question is whether your qualifications and assessment evidence support this code and the visa route you intend to use.

Who this may suit

Registered nurses considering ANZSCO 254499, including eligible graduates without specialist employment evidence.

Key considerations

  • NEC means not elsewhere classified; the occupation remains a registered nursing role.
  • ANMAC has specific guidance for applicants without work experience under its Modified assessment.
  • An assessment under one nursing code does not automatically support an application under another.

Understand the occupation’s purpose

ANZSCO 254499 covers registered nursing work not assigned to another listed nursing occupation. Examples include certain remote-area, infection-control and flight-nursing roles. Those examples help explain the classification; they do not remove the requirement for appropriate nursing skills and registration.

Consider the actual clinical responsibilities before choosing between NEC and a named specialisation. A hospital’s department label, a broad staff-nurse title or a list of several short rotations may need explanation. Avoid relabelling a clearly specialised employment history just because another code appears more attractive.

Apply ANMAC’s evidence rules to your situation

Under the current Modified assessment guidance, ANMAC directs registered nurses without work experience to the general code 254499. For a specific nursing code, it generally requires at least three months (260 hours) of aligned paid employment within the last five years. This is an assessment-specific rule, not a blanket exemption from visa work-experience requirements.

Check whether you qualify for Modified assessment at all. Other assessment pathways have different eligibility and employment requirements. In particular, the no-work-experience instruction should not be applied indiscriminately to Full assessment applicants.

Separate code selection from employment points

Being assessed as suitable for an occupation and establishing skilled employment for migration points are different issues. Do not assume that a positive NEC outcome confirms every period on your CV or every point claimed in SkillSelect.

If you want employment assessed, prepare references that describe your personal clinical work, dates and hours, rather than relying on a generic service statement. Keep agency assignments and overlapping employment periods clear. Do not include patient-identifying information merely to make a reference more detailed.

Check registration and the visa route

You still need the appropriate NMBA registration to practise in Australia. An ANMAC assessment cannot replace that registration, and registration alone does not grant a visa or work rights.

254499 is listed in the current MLTSSL, 482 Core Skills and 186 Direct Entry occupation instruments. Depending on your circumstances, consider 189, 190 or 491, or employer-sponsored 482, 186 or regional 494. Each route has its own requirements. Federal listing does not establish that a state will nominate you or that an employer’s proposed role is suitable.

Review the outcome before using it

Check the name, qualification and occupation on the issued outcome. If you later obtain sufficient experience in another nursing field, ANMAC has an outcome-update process, subject to its conditions. An update does not restart the original assessment’s validity period. Review the new outcome before changing an EOI or nomination claim.

Also check current English requirements, assessment expiry and your own visa expiry. ANMAC has announced assessment and portal changes later in 2026, so verify the operative instructions when applying. Choosing NEC does not guarantee an invitation, nomination or permanent residence.

Questions to consider

Can a newly registered graduate use 254499 without specialist work experience?

ANMAC’s current Modified guidance allows the general nursing code where the applicant has no work experience. The applicant must still qualify for that assessment and satisfy the intended visa criteria.

Can I use a NEC assessment to claim another nursing occupation?

Do not assume so. Check whether an updated assessment is needed and align the evidence with the occupation claimed.
