Check the community-pharmacy role
Retail Pharmacist concerns professional pharmacy services in a community setting, including dispensing medicines, reviewing prescriptions and counselling patients about appropriate use. Hospital Pharmacist and Industrial Pharmacist are separate occupations; pharmacy assistant and technician work should also be distinguished.
Prepare an accurate account of your qualifications, current registration and actual duties. A job in a pharmacy is not necessarily pharmacist-level employment. Explain any period in a support role separately from practice as a registered pharmacist.
Select the APC stream before booking an exam
APC publishes different streams based on qualification and registration history. Knowledge Stream applicants complete an eligibility check and OPRA. Competency Stream eligibility involves an approved qualification or adjudication process in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom or United States, plus current registration in one of those countries; its assessment uses CAOP.
Separate International Student and New Zealand Registered Pharmacist streams apply to applicants who meet their criteria. Check the complete eligibility instructions. Citizenship, a course title or an exam-coaching provider’s advice should not be used as a substitute for APC’s pathway decision.
Understand what OPRA does and does not provide
OPRA, the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment, replaced KAPS from March 2025. If you are starting the Knowledge Stream now, use the current OPRA guidance. Existing KAPS holders should check their own result and the applicable transition or validity rules rather than assume the historical result has become unusable.
Keep your examination result and Skills Assessment Outcome distinct. APC’s current guidance explains which document supports registration and which supports a migration application. Check the visa-specific assessment validity rules with Home Affairs; an exam-related validity statement is not automatically the visa validity period.
Plan the registration and supervised-practice steps
To practise pharmacy, you need registration through the Pharmacy Board of Australia and Ahpra. Overseas assessment can lead to further registration steps, including supervised practice and the applicable examinations. Confirm the requirements for your own stream rather than assuming every pharmacist follows the same internship process.
Where supervised practice is required, the practice site and preceptor must be appropriately approved. Clarify who will arrange supervision and whether the proposed employment accommodates the registration pathway. Do not begin counting practice hours on the assumption that an informal placement agreement is sufficient.
Compare the correct visa lists
Retail Pharmacist is on the STSOL. Under the current points-tested instrument, this can support state-nominated 190 or state-nominated 491 possibilities, subject to all criteria. It does not support 189 points-tested or family-sponsored 491 under this code.
251513 is also listed for 482 Core Skills, 186 Direct Entry and 494. Assess the employer, actual role, stream and any skills-assessment requirement or exemption. State nomination is not assured, and a minimum points score does not guarantee an invitation. Keep registration English, visa English and your current visa status under separate review.

Does passing OPRA make me a generally registered pharmacist?
No. The Pharmacy Board’s remaining registration requirements must be completed before practising at that registration level.
Can a pharmacy assistant job simply be claimed as pharmacist employment?
No. Describe the duties and registration status accurately and assess whether the period meets the relevant skilled-employment rules.
