Overview of Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804)

Subclass 804 Aged Parent visa is a permanent visa which allows adult child who is at least 18 years old and is either a settled Australian citizen, settled Australian permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen, to sponsor their aged parent(s), who is/are old enough to be eligible for an
age pension in Australia, to live permanently in Australia.

Aged Parent visa costs significantly less than Contributory Aged Parent visa but with longer precessing time of approximately 30 years or more.

Age Requirement

At the time of visa application decision, the applicant must be at an age equivalent to Age Pension age in Australia. The current Age Pension age in Australia is 66 years old and will increase progressively to 66 years & 6 months old from 1 Jul 2021 and 67 years old from 1 Jul 2023.

Who can be a Sponsor?

  • An adult child of the applicant or the adult child’s cohabiting spouse or de facto partner, who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, the child’s cohabiting spouse who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If both the applicant’s child and the cohabiting spouse of the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, a relative or guardian of the child or of the child’s spouse/de facto partner, who is at least 18 years old and above; or
  • If the applicant’s child is below 18 years old, a community organisation lawfully established in Australia where there is a relationship between the organisation and the applicant’s child.

If a sponsor is a person, the sponsor must be either a settled Australian citizen, settled Australian permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen.

How long can I stay after receiving the 143 Visa?

Indefinitely with 5-year travel facility after which you may need to apply for Subclass 155 or 157 Resident Return visa to extend your travel facility.

Where can I apply for the 804 visa?

The applicant must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, to apply for this visa and to be granted this visa.

What if I am also holding Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa?

At the time of application, the applicant must not be holding a Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa that is still in effect.

If the applicant held such a Subclass 870 visa, must have left Australia since that visa ceased to be in effect.

What happens to my other previously applied Partner Visa?

If application for another parent visa is still pending, the applicant can only apply for this Subclass 804 Aged Parent visa once a decision on the pending application has been made or the pending application has been withdrawn.

What is Family Balance Test Requirement?

To be eligible for this visa, the applicant must meet the balance of family test. In general, the applicant meets the balance of family test if there are more children living in Australia than in any other single country.

Assurance of Support

To be granted this visa, the applicant must have an assurer for an Assurance of Support. Assurance of Support assures the government that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa.
